So on we go...
Y: The Last Man
The story of Yorick Brown is ripe for a movie adaptation. The last man on the planet after a plague wipes out everything with a y chromosome, everyone wants a piece of him, and it’s never for that oh so cool reason we all think would come with being the last man on Earth. The most original post-apocalyptic comic this side of The Walking Dead (more on that in a moment), this has all the trappings of a classic film.
The Walking Dead
It’s hard to come up with an original zombie story these days, but by God Robert Kirkman has done it. Instead of focusing on the blood and gore (which there is still plenty of) Kirkman instead focuses on the human survival instinct and how it would play out under such extreme conditions. The story follows Rick and a crew of folks that have banded together after a zombie outbreak has occurred. See, all the Romero stuff like cities filled with panicked people has already happened, and while the zombies are still around, at this point the survivors are just trying to build a new life. The Walking Dead is the story of what happens after civilization has fallen, and zombies are slowly starting to become an accepted part of daily life. Not only has the recent remake of Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later and the awesome Shaun of the Dead proven there’s still “life” in zombie movies, but this concept is just original enough to stand heads above the rest in it’s genre.
Strangers in Paradise
The ultimate chick comic, this is the story of Francine, a woman who can’t land a decent relationship with a man, and her best friend Katchoo, a woman with a troubled past and who just happens to be madly in love with Francine. Strangers is a sweat story that has managed to snag as many male readers as female with it’s strong characterization, movie plots and emotional twists and turns. Even better, many female readers are shocked to learn that it’s a man that writes the series as writer/artist Terry Moore seems to capture the essence of female friendships. In the right hands, Strangers could not only be a mega hit, but could take it’s place among Fried Green Tomatoes, Beaches and Steel Magnolias in the pantheon of chick flicks of the gods.
